5 Ways to Cheer Up a Friend

Do you have a friend who’s down in the dumps? Here are a few of the best ways to cheer them up!

We all have bad days from time to time. It’s an inevitable part of life. But that doesn’t make it any easier.

When we see a friend or family member or significant other in emotional distress, our natural response is to want to cheer them up. That’s what we would want them to do for us, right?

If you know someone who could use a little light in their life, try one — or all — of these uplifters to help them out of their funk:

#1 – Hugs!

It may seem like a no brainer, but we can easily forget how restorative a simple hug can be. Plus, researchers have found that a hug that lasts for 20 seconds or more can cause the release of oxytocin, a hormone that can reduce stress levels.

#2 – Take Them Out

Sometimes, a change of scenery is all a person needs to see the light. If you’re buddy is down in the dumps, take them to a place that holds special meaning to them or that’s just fun. Getting out and about can help them clear their minds of negative thoughts.

#3 – Lend a Helping Hand

Feeling overwhelmed by responsibility is one of the main causes of the blues. Offer to help your friend with a chore or an errand. A small break and a little breathing room can do wonders.

#4 – Give a Gift

Everybody loves a surprise gift! Especially when they’re feeling under appreciated at home, at work or in a relationship. Try sending them a gourmet cake or handmade a card. The gift doesn’t have to be expensive for it to be effective. Thoughtful and surprising will do just fine.

#5 – Just Be There

We forget sometimes that the simple act of being there, listening, and sympathizing with a friend is the best way to help them through a difficult time. Life can be so hectic. Taking the time to get together may be all your friend really needs.
