Happy Birthday Betty White!

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012

I didn’t have a ton of friends growing up;  I wasn’t necessarily lonely, but the handful of friends I did hang around with weren’t always available, so I spent a lot of time with my Grandma, aunt and cousins.  My grandmother, Agnes, god rest her soul, was one of the liveliest, funniest women I have ever known.  To be sure, we spent a lot of time calling her foxy lady!    She was one of my best friends growing up… and the golden girls always reminded me of her, in particular, Betty White.
Grandma passed quite some time ago, but here Ms. White is, about to turn 90 years old, and she still reminds me of my grandmother Agnes – fun, lively, smart as a whip!   My sincerest gratitude to Betty White for her career as an actress and all the jokes that made us smile.

Don’t miss out on the very special 90th birthday tribute to Betty on Monday January 16th (Betty’s actual birthday is January 17th, one month before Grans :) ).

Politician Spends too much on Cake – naturally!

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

Can’t politicians get anything right? We know that these custom cakes can run a pretty penny, but color our frosting shocked when we found out that our very own New York Gov. Cuomo spent $600 on a birthday cake!  Ok, it probably wasn’t him directly, but as reported by the Daily News, his birthday cake purchase was listed as an “office expense” on his campaign finance filing!  Sure – it’s in the shape of New York and has lots of features, but look, times are hard… do we really need $600 birthday cakes?  Bake Me A Wish! would have shipped him one for under $50.00!  :)

I mean really – that’s somebody’s paycheck for a week.

Check out the article by Celeste Katz here:  disregard those comments Celeste – I think you’re cool for pointing this out!

Happy Birthday Mickey!

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

82 years ago today, Mickey Mouse appeared on the silver screen for the first time as Steamboat Willie.  I grew up with and am a big fan of Mickey; I’ve probably seen everything that he’s been animated in to.  He will always remain a symbol of fairness, kindheartedness and goodness in this world – an amazing feat for a cartoon!  I think my favorite character he was drawn into was a Bob Crachit in “A Disney Christmas Carol” – true type casting as for this special little mouse who touches millions of people.

So I ask you readers, if you could bake Mickey a cake, what flavor would it be?  I’m thinking…. New York Cheesecake.

Thanks for all the smiles Mickey!

Happy 25th Birthday Mario!

Monday, September 13th, 2010

OK, so this isn’t  Mario’s real birthday!  This little plumber worked his was into the hearts and minds of gamers everywhere with the release of Donkey Kong in 1981.  He was joined by his brother, Luigi, in Mario Bros. a couple of years later – but this edition wasn’t nearly as popular.  I don’t think Mario and Luigi really made it to the big time until they were stomping goombas and koopa troopers worldwide, in our homes, when Super Mario Bros. was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System back in ’85 (Japan’s release was today, the US release didn’t come until the following year).  For that, we’d like to wish Mario and Luigi a Happy Birthday.

Oh, the hours that were wasted finding warp zones, attaining 100 guys and running under Bowser (or jumping over him, if you had the skill!).   Congrats to Mario and Luigi – I’ll have mushrooms tonight in your honor.
