July 4 Fun Facts

Monday, June 30th, 2008

With Independance Day, which commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, coming up Friday — I thought some July 4 fun facts were in order.

  • Did you know that there are 30 places with the name “Liberty”?
  • $7.9 million — the dollar value of U.S. imports of American flags in 2002; more than half of this amount ($5.2 million) was for U.S. flags made in China.
  • 32.5 million — the number of foreign-born residents in the United States in 2002
  • $128.8 million — the value of fireworks imported from China, representing the bulk of all U.S. fireworks imports ($135.6 million) in 2002.
  • 2.5 million — in July 1776, the estimated number of people living in the newly independent nation.
  • More than 74 million — number of Americans who said they have taken part in a barbecue during the previous year

Be Careful Of Cheap Fuel

Friday, June 20th, 2008

There was a story done recently on my local station here in Las Vegas about people seeing the cheaper E85 fuel, putting it in their cars and after a tank or two or three, doing serious damage to their car engines, costing them a ton of money. It has been literally eating away at people’s engines. So — don’t do it. Just thought we here at Bake Me A Wish would pass along that little tidbit. We hope you’re able to find a way through these horribly high gas prices — but not at the cost of your poor car engine.

Tim Russert Remembered

Friday, June 13th, 2008

As we enter Father’s Day weekend, one of men who has done the most to honor that special bond of fatherhood, through his book about his own father and as a father himself, died today. “Meet The Press” host Tim Russert passed away at the age of 58. He was beloved by his colleagues, by his competitors and by his family and friends. He has left behing a lasting legacy that will be remembered by all whose lives he affected, whether in person or over the airwaves. He will be missed.
