Confessions of an Ice Cream Twirler

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

Time to fess up! Yours truly actually began his dessert career working in a Dairy Queen at the age of 14 years old. Back then I was flippin’ burgers and filling french fry orders at the Marine City Dairy Queen in Michigan (one of the largest, and BEST, Dairy Queens in the Midwest). Eventually, I worked my way up to front counter and drive through, joining the denizens of high school workers who twirled soft serve ice cream a top cones (then dipped!), scooping spanish nuts into Peanut Buster Parfaits, candies into Blizzards and creating those WONDERFUL ice cream cakes.

Color me shocked to hear that just yesterday Dairy Queen broke the Guinness Book of World Record for the LARGEST ICE CREAM CAKE EVER. While you may not have had the history I’ve had with the DQ, you may enjoy the article as much as I did:

I also found this video on YouTube that records the epic event:

Now, if only I can find the world’s biggest spoon…

And That Spells Mom – Giveaway!

Monday, May 2nd, 2011

Rightfully so, Mom’s everywhere deserve a break – a day to themselves. Thankfully, that day is this Sunday… we all hope that you honor your mother and father every chance you get, but Mother’s Day is the best time to do that extra something special for the woman who raised us.

We want to help! We’re going to give away 3 cakes this Thursday, each with a Mother’s Day occasion and ship them either to our winning readers to bring to their mom, or directly to their Moms wherever they may be in the continental US. AND – we’ll include a poem in the greeting card – the POEM YOU WRITE!! Here’s how to enter:

a) Write a quick little poem about your Mother – you must use the letters M – O – M to start each line. I’ll give you an example below. It can be funny, endearing – whatever you prefer. Post your mini-poem here in our comment section

b) Make sure you’re following us on Facebook, so you don’t miss the winning announcement!

c) We’ll post a follow up here as well on Thursday AM.

d) Please be available Thursday during the day to provide shipping information via email

e) Deadline to enter is Wednesday evening, 5/4/11 by 11:59pm

f) We’ll pick 3 winners from all of the entries using a random number generator. the more poems you write, the more you’re entered! Your comment numbers are your entry numbers for the raffle.

g) Winners will be allowed to choose their cake flavor!

Here’s a little poem I wrote about my wonderful ( and very Italian) mother:

M is for the many times she’s had to dry my tears
O is for the other times she’s hugged away my fears
Mom, I’ll always love you, throughout the many years

HAVE FUN WRITING!!
