On the note of expensive cakes…

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

This one may cost the baker a pretty penny! There was a People’s Court case posted on YouTube last month about a woman who received a misspelled cake for her daughter’s party – while we feel for the woman (the cake’s frosting was also cracked), suing the baker for $4300 when the cake cost $55 is a little obscene. Granted, if you have a problem with your $55 cake with Bake Me A Wish – we’ll reship or refund with no hassle… couldn’t the baker just give the woman her money back on the cake? Watch and judge for your self! (special thanks to cakewrecks.com for pointing this one out!)

Politician Spends too much on Cake – naturally!

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

Can’t politicians get anything right? We know that these custom cakes can run a pretty penny, but color our frosting shocked when we found out that our very own New York Gov. Cuomo spent $600 on a birthday cake!  Ok, it probably wasn’t him directly, but as reported by the Daily News, his birthday cake purchase was listed as an “office expense” on his campaign finance filing!  Sure – it’s in the shape of New York and has lots of features, but look, times are hard… do we really need $600 birthday cakes?  Bake Me A Wish! would have shipped him one for under $50.00!  :)

I mean really – that’s somebody’s paycheck for a week.

Check out the article by Celeste Katz here:  disregard those comments Celeste – I think you’re cool for pointing this out!

A Final Hogwarts Cake

Thursday, July 14th, 2011

With all the buzz surrounding the final installment of the Harry Potter series (i have my ticket for Saturday!), it’s no wonder that the Lincoln Center premiere tapped Charm City Cakes to create a gorgeous cake for the stars.  The Independant UK reports that Rupert Grint (he plays Ron Weasley) cut into the first slice – in case you’re not aware, this is Hogwarts as it would appear at the end of the story.

Since the premiere was here in New York City, we were bombarded with coverage of the event.  I’m still a bit amazed at the turnout – most of those waiting literally days in sweltering heat just to get a glimpse of the stars.  Oh yeah, and we discovered that the show Daniel Radcliff is in with John Laroquette (How to Succeed in Business…) also had to be closed down for a week!  That makes sense… I’m sure there’s more than one premiere, interview and conference these actors had to show up for!

ENJOY this wonderful photo, courtesy of Charm City Cakes.

Hogwarts Cake - Harry Potter

Powered up Pac-Man cake!

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

You’ve seen several posts from us about video game cakes and there is a good reason for that – I grew up as part of the Nintendo generation… even before that, I’d relish the days when my parents would bring me to an arcade or pizza parlor that had good old arcade cabinets. Oh how many quarters squandered! Like most video game aficionados, I got my start with a little known game called Pac-Man.

To my surprise, we found this delicious looking cake over at GamePro.com – a detailed version of the original stand up pack-man game. We’re pretty amazed at what this baker did – thanks for sharing GamePro!  Check out the link for a few more video game cakes!
