Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas for Long Distance Couples

Wednesday, January 29th, 2014

Red Velvet Cake for Valentine's DayIt’s nearly February, and you know what that means — Valentine’s Day is just a couple weeks away. And here you are, doomed to spend another Valentine’s away from your significant other.

Being in a long distance relationship is tough on a normal day, but Valentine’s Day really rubs it in.

You could waste the day moping around the house with the shades drawn, avoiding other couples like the plague. Or you could go about your day with a big smile on your face, knowing that your boyfriend, girlfriend, or spouse is being showered with thoughtful gifts.

Let’s make the best of the situation. Being away from your significant other on Valentine’s Day gives you the opportunity to surprise the heck out him or her.

Here are a few ideas to get the creative juices flowing:

The Trusty Handmade Card

Some people claim Valentine’s Day was created by greeting card companies, which wouldn’t be surprising judging by the sheer immensity of cards sold during the holiday. Break from the norm and make a card yourself. Even if you’re not artistically inclined, a handmade card is undeniably sweet.

An “Intimate” Candlelit Dinner

Okay, so you can’t have dinner together in person. Why not use the power of technology for good and set a dinner date over Skype? You can turn the lights down low, light a few candles, and toast to your love virtually. Just be careful not to spill wine on your keyboard when clinking glasses.

The Gift That Keeps on Giving

Technology to the rescue again. Take pictures of yourself — you know the type — and send them throughout the day to your significant other via SnapChat. You can set an expiration for each picture, so when they’re gone, they’re gone forever. You may want to warn your significant other ahead time though or else an unintended audience might get an eyeful.

Watch a Romantic Movie “Together”

No Valentine’s Day would be complete without watching a sappy romantic movie together. Though, in your case, you’ll have to trade the couch for the phone. Pop in your favorite romcom, dialup your sweetie, and enjoy. You’ll want to choose something you’ve both seen because you’ll probably end up talking through the whole thing.

“Make” Him or Her Dinner

No, we’re not recommending you make dinner and send it via snail mail — that’s a better option for cake. Instead, you could try calling up a local restaurant that delivers, ordering up his or her favorite dish, and paying over the phone. If you time it right, you could have it coincide with your Skype date.

Don’t Forget Dessert!

You’ve got dinner covered, but what about dessert? You can have that delivered too. Just select his or her favorite cake or bakery item, write a thoughtful message, and we’ll take care of the rest. We recommend the red velvet chocolate cake — it’s a Valentine’s Day favorite.

Spending Valentine’s away from your significant other is bummer. But you can still make the day memorable. It just takes a little creativity and forethought to get it right.
