Easy New Year’s Eve Party Treats for the Super Busy

December 26th, 2013

New Year's Eve Party TreatsThrowing a New Year’s Eve bash? Make sure you’ve got the treats that’ll keep your guests smiling well past midnight.

Christmas is over and New Year’s Eve is fast approaching. And if you’ve volunteered your home for the big celebration, you’re probably scrambling to put a menu together right about now.

For many people, New Year’s Eve is the last hurrah for the holiday eating fest. Come New Year’s Day, they’ll be dusting off the scales and renewing their gym memberships. So you better make it count!

Here are a few easy, must-have treats for your New Year’s Eve extravaganza:

Shrimp Cocktail — These tend to go fast, so make sure you buy lots. Most stores sell pre-assembled shrimp cocktail party platters, making this a simple and delicious appetizer that can be stacked in the fridge and pulled out as needed.

Cake — No party is complete without a cake! Serve each guest a slice with a glass of champagne for the countdown. We can make it really easy on you by delivering a gourmet cake directly to your front door, complete with an occasion plaque made of Belgian chocolate.

Chips and Dip — The old party standby. Chips and dip are a super easy and cheap way to keep people noshing all night long. Place bowls of chips throughout your house, so everybody can partake.

Veggies — You’ve got to have something to make everybody feel a little healthier, especially since some people will be starting their diet in the morning. You wouldn’t want them to shock their systems. Every grocery store has these ready to serve. But, if you have some extra time, it’s cheaper to buy the veggies and cut them up yourself.

Champagne — Well, of course you need champagne (and sparkling cider for the non-drinkers). You might want to think about picking up some plastic champagne flutes too, if you don’t have the real thing. They look a lot classier than red Solo cups.

Pizza — Even if your party invitation says “drinks and hors d’oeuvres,” some of your guests will still “forget” to eat dinner before they come over. Pizza is an easy way to keep people full and happy. The bake-at-home variety are best for parties because you can serve hot pizzas all night.

If you don’t have a ton of time to plan a New Year’s Eve party, just keep it simple. These easy New Year’s Eve treats are sure to make your party a success. Here’s to a Happy New Year’s from Bake Me a Wish!

Holiday Gift Ideas for Distant Family and Friends

December 11th, 2013

Shopping for a distant family member or friend can be a real challenge. What do they do in their free time? What hobbies are they into? What size sweater do they wear?

Cake and other bakery delights are a favorite of the holiday season, and almost everyone appreciates a gourmet baked good. (Don’t worry — we’ve got ideas for health nuts too).

Here are a few fun suggestions based on the recipient’s personality:

6 Ways to Simplify Your Thanksgiving Feast

November 23rd, 2013

Photo Credit: Ruocaled (Creative Commons)The countdown begins. Are you ready for Turkey Day?

Chances are, if you’re looking for ways to simplify a Thanksgiving meal by now, you’re a little behind on preparation.

No worries! Thanksgiving is supposed to be fun, right? We’ve got a few ideas for making the big feast a bit more manageable this year:

  1. Make a menu and check your list twice! One of the biggest time sucks of preparing a Thanksgiving meal is making multiple trips to the grocery store. Take a little extra time to put a menu together and a grocery list that has everything you need on it. If you have time, give yourself a couple days to make the list. You’ll probably think of more to add.
  2. Prepare side dishes the night before. If there’s anything you can make or assemble for the oven ahead of time, do it. You’ll have plenty to keep you busy on Thanksgiving Day. Do a search for “make ahead Thanksgiving recipes.” You’ll find a lot of great ideas.
  3. Skip the dessert (preparation). We’re not suggesting you skip the sweets all together, just the making-it part. You can get a gourmet cake delivered right to your doorstep with a few clicks of your mouse. Check out these Thanksgiving favorites for ideas.
  4. Cut your dirty dishes in half. Not literally! For a big meal like Thanksgiving, using disposal cooking pans, plates, cups, and silverware can save you a ton of time. If you’re worried about being wasteful, just buy aluminum cooking pans. The rest can usually be stuffed into the dishwasher.
  5. Bigger is not always better. A huge turkey takes a long time to cook. If you’re entertaining a small group, look for a smaller turkey or even a turkey breast. The butcher at the grocery store should be able to recommend the right-sized turkey for your gathering.
  6. Buy an oven ready turkey. All you have to do is remove the frozen turkey from the freezer and pop it in the oven. No defrosting or prep required. These can be a lifesaver if you’re terrified of cooking a turkey “from scratch.” Bonus!!! Many oven ready turkeys come with pre-made gravy.

Take a breath — you’ve got this. Preparing a Thanksgiving meal is only as hard as you want it to be. A simple meal can be just as scrumptious as an elaborate one.

Good luck with your kitchen adventures and have a Happy Thanksgiving from Bake Me a Wish!

4 Heartwarming Long Distance Thanksgiving Gift Ideas

November 13th, 2013

Being away from home for Thanksgiving is tough. But you can still be a part of your family’s turkey dinner in spirit!

Long Distance Thanksgiving Gift Ideas

Here are four long distance Thanksgiving gift ideas that are sure to make your presence felt even though you can’t be there in person:

Make a Card by “Hand” — Nothing says “I’m thinking of you” like a handmade card on the holidays. Remember those turkeys you used to make in kindergarten by tracing your hand on a piece of construction paper? Just fold the paper in half, cutout the tracing, decorate, and voila! You’ve got an adorable “hand”-made card.

Use Skype to Say “Thank You” — When everybody sits down at the table, lots of families like to say what each person is thankful for. If you have a tech-savvy family member, have her call you on Skype when the time comes and set the virtual you at an empty spot at the table. That way you can join in and tell everybody what you’re thankful for this year.

Send a Sweet Surprise — A phone call is sweet, but a cake is sweeter! We make it easy to send gourmet cakes anywhere in the United States overnight. Choose from several Thanksgiving Day favorites, and say exactly what you’re thinking with a personalized “Happy Thanksgiving” card.

Frame a Favorite Picture — Thanksgiving is all about family in all shapes and sizes. Do you have a favorite picture of when you were all together? Get it framed and send it to your family to open at Thanksgiving meal. It will serve as a heartwarming reminder of how much you love one another.

Of course, if you’re really gung ho, you could give all of these gifts and surprise the heck out of your family this year!

Have any heartwarming gift ideas of your own? Share them in the comments below. And have a terrific Turkey Day!
