What’s the Deal With the ‘Smash Cake’ Trend?

A cake that’s made explicitly for destroying — what the?

Baby Enjoying a Smash CakeIf you’ve had a kid sometime in the last 10 years, you’ve probably heard (and experienced) a growing trend at first year birthday parties. It’s called a “smash cake,” and it’s apparently all the rage.

A smash cake is basically a small cake that parents put in front of their baby at his or her first birthday party with the hope that the child will absolutely obliterate the confectionary treat. At some point during the party, a larger cake is served to the guests. But the smash cake is for baby alone.

Parents and party guests are encouraged to watch and snap pictures as the cuteness factor reaches full capacity.

At least, that’s what’s supposed to happen. Not all babies have gotten the memo about smash cakes. Many kids don’t know what to do with the cake. And some, who have never tasted the sugary treat before, don’t even like it.

And that’s okay. The whole idea is to let your baby’s personality shine through. For some one-year-olds, this will result in the cake’s total annihilation. For others, curious probing.

Baby Playing with Smash CakeA Few ‘Smashing’ Tips

  • Use a disposable table cloth. Lay it on the floor and sit baby and cake on top of it. This will make cleanup a lot easier. And use a solid color tablecloth, so baby will be the focus of your pictures.
  • Strip baby down to his or her diapers. That way, you can take baby directly to the bath following the cake smash.
  • Put the cake on a cake stand. If baby is a little apprehensive about destroying the cake, a wobbly stand will help encourage the destruction.
  • Take lots of pictures! Depending on how much baby gets into it, the reactions can be priceless.
  • Have bath supplies at the ready. In preparation for the event, get a towel, wash cloth, and soap out for a quick post-smash scrub down.

All in all, just have fun. This is baby’s chance to destroy something without his or her parents intervening. Not something that happens everyday!

That said, we couldn’t resist sharing this wonderful article on the Army’s 237th birthday. Mr. Buddy Valestro, of Cake Boss fame, created a tank of a cake! Literally!   They celebrated their birthday right here in NYC.  You can read the full article over at the Daily Mail, but you’ll find a picture of his creation below. That a great cake… but I doubt we could ship it! :)

Angry Birds Take The Cake!

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

Have you played this game? Angry Birds have been infecting smart phones everywhere (and expanded to computers and game consoles alike) and taking up lots of free time. What is it? A puzzle game! Why, you simply fling your Angry Birds with a sling shot and try to take out structures that house bad little (green) pigs. I’ll be honest, I’ve played – it’s addicting!

There are a lot of fans of the game out there and this father knew his son would get a kick out of creating a custom made Angry Birds cake (nice job Mike!). Visit the full article on PCWorld.com that also has a video of the cake working just like in the game!

Approaching Lady Liberty

amboatride2On Saturday Morning around 6am, when most Americans were still snuggled in bed with visions of fireworks dancing in their heads, our team made their way to Liberty Island to prepare for the historic reopening of the Statue of Liberty’s crown. For those who have never seen a summer sunrise in New York City, the view from the Statue Cruise line was incredible! While we were a bit tired, our team was ready for a fantastic day in honor of America’s birthday.

Upon arrival we prepared our tent and cake display for the reopening ceremony. Our crown display was a hit at the celebration and the ceremony was attended by such dignitaries as Gov. Corzine (D-NJ), Gov. Patterson (D-NY) and Mayor Michael Bloomberg. We even had a chance to meet Ken Salazar, the Secretary of the Interior!

Back at our tent, our team prepared the 3000 cakes that we were handing out that day – a sight not to be missed.

For the hours that followed, we collected thousands of letters in support of soldiers and enjoyed the company of our fellow Americans as they participated in a wonderful 4th of July celebration. Some even stopped to eat our delicious Cookies and Cream Singular Sensation, right there on the spot!

We had an amazing time with everyone and encourage each and everyone to get behind a cause, find something you can dedicate your heart to and make a difference in this world.

We gave away 3000 cakes!
