A Letter From Shoshana Johnson

Dear Reader,

My name is Shoshana Johnson; some of you may have heard of me before. I’m the first black POW in US History, which I talk about in my new book I’M STILL STANDING. I know what it’s like to face those who challenge American values and who want to interrupt our freedoms. I know what it’s like to be far away from home, and in the worst of possible scenarios.

For a soldier in active duty, there are few things more rewarding than receiving a gift from a loved one at home. But what really gets our attention is when average Americans take the time to think of us by sending a token on their appreciation. The good people here at Bake Me A Wish! started a program called Operation: Birthday Cake along with Soldiers’ Angels, a non-profit soldier support group. Each month, their sending gourmet birthday cakes to active military personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan so that they can enjoy an American birthday tradition, despite being so far away from home. 5% of each order placed at Bake Me A Wish.com helps with their donations to troops overseas, or you can purchase one of their Freedom Cakes and have a donation made in yours or a loved one’s name. They also offer retail purchase of cakes that can be shipped to APO and FPO addresses.

It’s difficult to keep morale up when you’re in desolate conditions and surroundings; thanks to Bake Me A Wish, soldiers are still able to celebrate their birthday – to have a moment that’s theirs alone, no matter where they are in the world.
